Now that you have prepped your responses and understand how to answer behavioral interview questions using the STAR format, what else should you do?
Research:
Before an interview, you should research the company you are interviewing for. This includes things like company values, history, and/or mission statements. Adapt your answers or questions with this information. Finding out what a company values will help you figure out how to present yourself and your work experience. Do they talk a lot about safety on their website? Highlight how you have made your work or workplace safer.
Reread:
You should reread the job description. Determine what words are repeated or emphasized. Do you have clear experience in those areas, or how can you tailor your answers to their job description? Do not lie about your experience if you do not have any in those keywords. Instead, if they ask about it, tell them what you know, how it relates to your experience, and what you are doing to learn or grow in that area.
Find out your audience:
Find out who your interviewers are. Their names and job titles may be included in an email. This will help to determine what you should talk about in your interview. For example, if you are talking to a recruiter, they may not know any technical jargon about construction.
Practice:
Practice your answers to the most common interview questions using the STAR method. You can find what those common questions are from online research, past experience, or thinking about what questions they could ask from the job description. Practice makes perfect, and practicing using the STAR format to answer questions will help you be less nervous during interviews.
