The STAR method is a tested way to get clear and concise answers and will help guide the narrative of your interview answers
Situation
The S in STAR stands for situation. This means to start your answer, explain the situation to give context to the rest of your answer.
It is important to keep this short because the interviewers don’t need to know everything.
Example:
Interview question: “Can you tell me about a time you supported a team on a construction project?”
Situation: “I was working on a residential construction site as a laborer, helping with the framing of a new house.”
Task
The T stands for task. After describing the situation, move on to talk about the task, problem, goal, or challenge you had to take on or solve.
Keep this section short, too. State the problem with only the information that is needed. Also, make sure you are not saying anything confidential or compromising. Don’t bad-mouth your previous company. Keep your answer neutral or positive.
Example:
Question: “Can you tell me about a time you supported a team on a construction project?”
Task: “My task was to assist the carpenters by measuring and cutting materials, ensuring everything was ready for assembly.”
Action
Next, describe the personal actions you took to help fix the problem, reach the goal, or complete the task
This will be the majority of your answer. During this portion, it is important to highlight what skills or character traits you used to take action.
Example:
Question: “Can you tell me about a time you supported a team on a construction project?”
Action: “I double-checked measurements, used a circular saw to cut lumber accurately, and organized materials to keep the site efficient and safe.”
Result
The last part of your answer should be the results of what you learned from the experience.
Explain the positive results of your actions. You can also add what you learned from the experience during this section.
Example:
Question: “Can you tell me about a time you supported a team on a construction project?”
Result: “By staying organized and accurate, I helped the crew stay on schedule, reduced material waste, and gained confidence using power tools.”
