What Happens After “I’m So Glad I Came”?

At the Building Futures Construction Expo, a student walked away from a booth and said, “I’m so glad I came.”

It’s a simple moment. Easy to miss if you’re not listening for it.

But that moment is everything.

Because interest is not the problem. Curiosity is not the problem. The next step is.

Just days after the Expo, we saw the other side of that reality at our Networking & Hiring Event in collaboration with go2work. In one room, we had people at every stage of their journey. Some were there to learn more about the construction industry for the first time. Others had years of experience and were looking for their next opportunity.

That’s the workforce.

Not one type of person. Not one entry point. Not one path.

And if we are serious about building a strong, sustainable workforce, we have to build systems that connect all of it.

From Exposure to Opportunity

The Building Futures Construction Expo did exactly what it was designed to do. It gave students a chance to see themselves in the industry. To try something new. To ask questions. To walk away thinking, maybe this is for me.

But exposure alone doesn’t build careers.

Without a clear next step, that excitement fades. The moment passes.

That’s why spaces like our Networking & Hiring Event matter. They create the bridge between curiosity and opportunity. They give people a place to take that first step or the next one, depending on where they are.

Where Conversations Turn into Careers

At the Networking & Hiring Event, that connection came to life.

We saw a diverse mix of attendees, from individuals exploring construction for the first time to experienced professionals ready for their next move. In one room, the full spectrum of the workforce was present.

Employers felt it too.

Companies like Whiting-Turner experienced consistent engagement throughout the event, with curious job seekers returning to their table again and again to ask questions, learn more, and explore opportunities. That kind of interaction doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when the right people are brought together in the right environment.

We also heard from industry leaders who helped expand what attendees thought was possible. Nick Guidry of Apache Industrial shared insights on apprenticeship pathways, sparking interest among many who hadn’t previously considered that route. For some, it introduced a new direction. For others, it clarified a path they were already on.

That’s what it looks like when curiosity starts to turn into action.

Meeting the Workforce Where They Are

One of the most important reminders from the hiring event was this: workforce development is not one-size-fits-all.

Some people are just beginning to explore construction.
Some are ready to get hired.
Some are already in the industry and looking to grow.

If we only build for one of those groups, we lose the others.

But when we intentionally create opportunities to meet people where they are, we start to build something stronger. A workforce that is not only growing but evolving.

Strengthening the Foundation: Safety and Engagement

Building a strong workforce doesn’t stop at hiring. It continues in how we support and engage craft workers once they are on the job.

On April 2, C3 relaunched its Safety Committee, bringing industry professionals together to focus on one of the most critical aspects of workforce sustainability: keeping people safe and engaged.

During the meeting, Josh Bernard of McCorvey Sheet Metal presented on craft worker engagement in safety, emphasizing the role of communication, involvement, and culture in creating safer jobsites.

The response from attendees reinforced the value of these conversations. Participants rated the meeting a perfect 5.0 out of 5, with 100% of respondents selecting the highest rating. Attendees highlighted collaborative discussions, relevant topics, and networking opportunities as key takeaways, and notably, no safety concerns were raised by participants in attendance.

This is what it looks like when the industry comes together not just to hire, but to improve how we work.

Building More Than Moments

Events matter. But one event alone won’t solve a workforce shortage.

What matters is how those moments connect to something bigger.

That’s the work in front of us, and it continues this year in several key ways.

On July 7, we will host our Workforce Development Conference at United Way Houston. This is where industry leaders, workforce partners, and educators come together to align around real challenges and real solutions. It is where strategy turns into action.

And on August 29, we’re bringing the industry together in a different way for Construction Industry Night with the Houston Dynamo as they take on the San Jose Earthquakes. Co-branded Dynamo and C3 hard hats will be available, creating a visible connection between our industry and our city. The night will also include a pre-match hiring event, and we are actively seeking employers and sponsors to be part of it.

Because building a workforce also means building pride, connection, and a sense of belonging in the industry.

What Happens Next Is Up to All of Us

That student who said, “I’m so glad I came,” is at the very beginning of their journey.

What happens next will depend on what we build around that moment.

  • Will there be opportunities to explore further?
  • Will there be clear pathways into training and employment?
  • Will there be employers ready to engage, hire, and invest in people?

If the answer is yes, that one moment can turn into a career.

If not, it becomes just another missed opportunity.

Be Part of What Comes Next

If you are an employer, a partner, or someone who cares about the future of the construction industry, there is a place for you in this work.

  • Participate in upcoming hiring events.
  • Attend the Workforce Development Conference.
  • Sponsor or engage in Construction Industry Night.
  • Attend C3 Safety Committee meetings.
  • Partner with C3 to help strengthen the workforce pipeline.

Because building a stronger industry doesn’t happen by chance.

It happens when we intentionally connect people, opportunities, and leadership at every stage of the journey.

And we’re just getting started.
