Who Invested in You?

Construction Career Collaborative

When we talk about C3’s mission, we use words like workforce development, training, safety, skilled trades, and the talent pipeline. Those are important words, but sometimes they can make us forget that the work is really about people.

And for many of us in the construction industry, there is probably a personal reason this work matters.

Maybe you are a contractor who knows firsthand how difficult it has become to find enough skilled craft professionals to complete the work ahead.

Maybe you are where you are today because someone invested in you. A company gave you your first opportunity, paid for training, paired you with a mentor, or trusted you with more responsibility before you were completely sure you were ready for it.

Maybe you have watched someone start in the field and work their way into leadership, building a career and a life for their family along the way.

Or maybe you simply believe the next generation deserves to know that construction is an option.

That last one is especially important to me.

There are young people and adults throughout Greater Houston who may never have considered construction because no one has shown them what is possible. They may not know about apprenticeships, paid training, certifications, or the many career paths available in our industry. They may not realize that learning a skilled trade can be the beginning of a career that provides stability, advancement, and economic mobility.

Sometimes all it takes is exposure to an opportunity, followed by someone willing to open a door.

That is where C3 comes in.

Our work brings together construction companies, building owners, training partners, educators, community organizations, and individuals who all have a role to play in strengthening the safe, skilled, and sustainable craft workforce pipeline.

Sometimes that looks like introducing a job seeker to an employer.

Sometimes it is helping someone access training.

Sometimes it is putting construction professionals in front of students who have never met an electrician, plumber, welder, HVAC technician, or other craft professional and letting them see that these careers are real and attainable.

And sometimes it is simply creating the connection that allows the next opportunity to happen.

As We Head Toward the End of the Year

We are not launching a big year-end giving campaign today. In fact, we are still thinking through what that will look like.

But as we approach the time of year when individuals and companies begin making decisions about charitable giving, I wanted to put C3 on your radar.

Before you decide where to invest your philanthropic dollars this year, think about your own connection to this industry.

Who invested in you?

Who gave you an opportunity?

What would it mean for your company if Greater Houston had a stronger pipeline of trained craft professionals?

And what could change for a young person or job seeker if someone helped them discover an opportunity in construction that they did not know existed?

Supporting C3 is ultimately an investment in people and in the future of the industry we all depend on.

There will be more to come as we get closer to the end of the year. For now, I hope you will keep C3 in mind when you think about the organizations and causes that have a connection to your own story.

Because chances are, if construction has provided an opportunity for you, your company, your employees, or your family, there is something personal about this mission after all.
