C3 Is “The Only”

With so many organizations recognizing the need to bring more people into the skilled trades, and some of them backed by millions of dollars, I will admit that I was once a little worried C3 might become obsolete.

How could a smaller nonprofit like ours compete with organizations that have significantly larger budgets, broader reach, and more resources?

Then I heard Shayla Atkins of The Atkins Group Consulting say something that completely changed my perspective:

“Don’t try to be better. Be the only.”

That is when it clicked for me: C3 is the only.

Many organizations can invest large amounts of money into recruiting people, providing training, and placing them in craft positions. That work is important, and our industry needs more of it. But getting someone hired is only the beginning.

What happens after they walk onto the jobsite?

Are they joining a company that is prepared to continue developing them? Do they understand what they need to learn to advance? Can they see a path from an entry-level position to greater responsibility, higher wages, and a lasting career?

If the answer is no, we should not be surprised when they leave.

This is where C3 is different.

We do a great deal of visible work to strengthen the workforce pipeline. We introduce young people to career opportunities in construction. We work with community partners to provide training. We connect job seekers with employers through hiring events and other opportunities.

But some of C3’s most important work happens behind the scenes.

We work directly with construction companies to help them create workplaces where people can build careers, not simply fill jobs.

Many companies are already training their employees every day, even if they have never called it a formal training program. Experienced craft professionals teach newer employees how to perform tasks safely, solve problems, and meet the company’s standards. C3 helps employers take what they already do well and build a structured training program around it.

We help them document that training and connect it to clearly defined career paths. Employees can see what skills they need to develop, what their next opportunity could be, and how continued learning can lead to promotions and higher wages.

That clarity matters. People are more likely to stay when they can see where they are going.

C3 also maintains rigorous employment standards designed to protect the people entering our industry. Craft professionals working for C3 Accredited Employers must be properly paid as W-2 employees and covered by workers’ compensation insurance.

We believe companies need to own their workforce because nobody invests in training workers they do not intend to keep.

Through grant-funded programs, C3 can also help employers offset the cost of upskilling their current employees and provide access to essential safety training. This allows companies to strengthen their workforce while helping employees become safer, more skilled, and better prepared for advancement.

All of these pieces are necessary if we truly want to solve the construction workforce shortage.

Recruitment matters. Training matters. Placement matters. But retention is what turns an opportunity into a career, and a new hire into the experienced craft professional our industry will need years from now.

Large organizations and coalitions may have the resources to train and place thousands of people. C3 welcomes that investment, and we want to work alongside them to help make it sustainable.

We would love to help ensure that the craft professionals entering the industry through these programs land with companies where they can stay, grow, and build meaningful careers. We want to help make sure the millions of dollars being invested in recruitment, training, and placement are poured into something that will last.

Because people will not stay in construction simply because we helped them get their first job. They will stay when they are treated like professionals, trained intentionally, paid properly, protected on the job, and shown a path forward.

That is the work C3 was created to do.

We are not trying to compete by being bigger. We want to be the partner that helps organizations, coalitions, employers, and training providers turn workforce investment into long-term impact.

We are strengthening the part of the workforce pipeline that too often gets overlooked: what happens after someone is hired.

We are helping construction companies become employers where skilled professionals can build lasting careers.

That is what makes C3 different.

That is why C3 is still needed.

And that is why C3 is “the only.”
